Best Data Bundle for Streaming: How Much Do You Actually Need?
Instead of guessing, work from realistic per-hour data usage estimates for the apps you actually use, then size your bundle to match. Here are the general figures and how to apply them.
Why "how much data do I need" has no single answer
Data usage depends heavily on video resolution, app settings, and connection quality — the same app can use very different amounts of data from one session to the next. What follows are widely-cited general estimates, not exact guarantees, but they're accurate enough to size a bundle sensibly instead of guessing blindly.
Video streaming (YouTube, Netflix, and similar)
- Standard definition (SD): roughly 0.7-1GB per hour.
- High definition (HD): roughly 1.5-3GB per hour, depending on the exact resolution (720p vs 1080p) and bitrate.
- Audio-only or lowest quality setting: well under 0.5GB per hour, useful if you mainly want the sound (e.g. music, podcasts, lecture audio) rather than sharp video.
If you watch about 2 hours of SD video a day, that's roughly 1.5-2GB daily, or very roughly 10-15GB for a week. Switching to HD can easily double or triple that, so checking your app's quality setting (see our guide on why data finishes fast) matters as much as the bundle you buy.
WhatsApp calls and messaging
- Text messages: negligible — thousands of messages use a tiny fraction of a gigabyte.
- Voice calls: light, typically well under 50MB for a long call.
- Video calls: roughly 200-400MB per hour at standard quality, more if the call quality is set higher or the connection pushes a higher bitrate.
- Photo and video sharing: adds up separately from calls — a few received videos in a busy group chat can be tens to hundreds of megabytes if auto-download is on.
Short-form video (TikTok, Instagram Reels)
Short clips loop and auto-play continuously, and the next video often pre-loads while you're still watching the current one. This means an hour of casual scrolling can use a comparable amount of data to watching a similar length of regular video, even though each individual clip is short. Enabling "Data Saver" inside the app (found in TikTok's Settings and Privacy menu) measurably reduces this.
Social media browsing (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X)
Scrolling feeds full of photos and auto-playing video typically uses noticeably more data than plain text browsing — commonly in a broad range depending on how image/video-heavy the feed is and whether auto-play is on. Turning off video auto-play (covered in our data-saving guide) is the single biggest lever here.
Zoom and other video conferencing
- Audio-only meeting: light, similar to a voice call.
- Video meeting, gallery view with multiple participants: can use noticeably more than a simple one-to-one video call, since your device is receiving several video streams at once. Switching to "speaker view" instead of "gallery view," and lowering video quality in the app's settings, both reduce this meaningfully.
A simple way to size your bundle
- Estimate your typical daily hours for each activity (e.g. "1 hour of YouTube, 30 minutes of WhatsApp video, an hour of social media").
- Apply the rough per-hour figures above to get a daily estimate.
- Multiply by the number of days your bundle needs to cover.
- Add a reasonable buffer (10-20%) for updates, browsing, and days when usage runs higher than usual.
Example: someone watching 1 hour of SD video (roughly 0.7-1GB) plus 30 minutes of WhatsApp video calls (roughly 0.1-0.2GB) daily is looking at roughly 1-1.5GB per day, or very roughly 7-10GB for a week with a small buffer. Heavier HD viewing would push that estimate considerably higher.
Matching the estimate to a real bundle
Once you have a rough daily or weekly figure, compare it against the price-per-GB across sizes rather than buying the first bundle that looks "big enough." Our cheap data bundles guide walks through that comparison, and if you tend to have leftover data some weeks and run out in others, non-expiry data avoids losing what you don't use by a hard deadline. You can shop live bundle sizes on our MTN, Telecel, and AirtelTigo pages.
Frequently asked questions
How much data does one hour of YouTube use?
Roughly 0.7-1GB per hour at standard definition, and roughly 1.5-3GB per hour at HD quality. These are general estimates, not exact figures.
How much data does a WhatsApp video call use?
Typically roughly 200-400MB per hour at standard quality. Voice-only calls use considerably less.
What size bundle do I need for a few hours of streaming a day?
For roughly 2 hours of SD video daily, a weekly bundle in the 10-15GB range is a reasonable starting estimate — adjust upward for HD viewing or added video calls.
Does TikTok use more data than YouTube?
It can use a comparable or even higher rate per minute because clips loop and pre-load continuously. The app's built-in data saver mode helps reduce this.
